China Unveils “Shiguang S1” — A Household Robot That Can Cook, Clean & Even Talk to the Elderly

China has taken another big step into the future of AI-powered robotics with the launch of the “Shiguang S1,” the country’s first general-purpose household robot. Introduced in Wuhan by Chinese robotics company GigaBrain, the robot is designed to help families with everyday household tasks while interacting naturally with humans.

Unlike traditional factory robots that follow fixed instructions, the Shiguang S1 is built for real homes and changing environments. The robot can fold clothes, cook meals, clear dining tables, and even assist elderly people by chatting with them and helping with daily activities. What makes it especially interesting is its ability to continuously learn new tasks using AI, making it smarter over time.

According to GigaBrain, the robot runs on the company’s self-developed “embodied intelligence” model, allowing it to understand surroundings and react intelligently instead of simply repeating programmed actions. Company executives say the robot can plan tasks on its own and adapt to different home situations — something older household robots struggle to do.

Safety has also been a major focus. The Shiguang S1 reportedly includes a protection system that immediately stops the robot if it accidentally touches a person or pet while moving, reducing the risk of injury inside homes.

For now, the robot is being tested with selected families in Wuhan through an early “seed user” program. While pricing details are still unknown, the launch highlights China’s growing ambitions in AI robotics, smart homes, and elderly care technology. Experts believe robots like Shiguang S1 could eventually become common household assistants in the coming years as AI continues to evolve rapidly.
